It is common practice for companies to keep a database of resumes from candidates that have applied to open positions. I think it is going to depend on the company and the recruiter but I don't think this is a way of brushing you off. Often times, recruiters will source through an existing resume database when a new position becomes available. However, I wouldn't always rely on this. It is still important for you to continue applying to available positions that interest you and meet your qualifications. This will ensure your application stays relevant and it continues to let the company know of your interest.

This is very much an answer that is dependent upon each individual company. For some, and I won’t sugar coat it, this is simply a warm and fuzzy nicety. While they certainly will keep you in their system, they may not have the capacity or the system in place to re-review candidates every time a position pops up. Some I would imagine, and again there could be 100 different correct answers to this question, will continue to run candidates they have seen apply against open and future positions. What it does ensure, in any case, is that you are showing interest. A company may truly not deem you a fit for a particular position, but when you happen to apply for another, it’s nice to see that you have shown a consistent interest in the firm as a whole, and this history of application helps to back that up. This DOES NOT mean that you should begin to apply to positions that don’t interest you or that you aren’t qualified for simply to enter a company’s system – I can’t say that with enough emphasis. While it can help as I stated to show interest, it can also go the other way if you abuse that system and mass apply to everything, multiple times, everywhere.

This is a great question! As someone who works within a recruiting database very regularly, I can say there is certainly an advantage to being in an employers system. Often times there is a setting which allows you to see resumes that list similar qualifications to the role being posted. To take this a step further, the database will sometimes send an email to candidates who are already in the system and who fit the description for a new role.
This being said, if you are genuinely interested in a company for specific reasons unique to them, check their career site regularly. Don't rely too heavily on the system to know what would be a good fit for you. Persistence is a great way to show a company that you value their work and can stick with a goal over an extended period of time. Best of luck!
