Good question! When one is creating or updating their resume and deciding whether or not to include their GPA and/ or class rank, one should review the job or internship description. Within the description, is where the employer most typically indicates a certain GPA and/ or class rank. But if the job or internship description does not indicate a certain GPA and/ or class rank, then one can exclude that information from their resume. Overall, I believe it to be a personal preference whether to include that information or not. Also, because most likely on the application there will be a place where one can fill in their GPA and/or class rank. Thus, leaving more room on your resume for skills, experiences, etc.

Hello! This is a great question and one that is ultimately a personal preference when you are creating and revising your resume. Companies may include a minimum GPA requirement in the job description, and my recommendation is that if your GPA meets or exceeds the minimum GPA set by the company to include it on your resume. If you do not meet the minimum GPA requirements, I would exclude it from your resume. Companies will either ask the question on the application or it will be a question during an interview. During the interview, this would give you the opportunity to explain what led you to having a lower GPA and how you are working to improve it. If the company does not include a minimum GPA requirement, my recommendation would be to include your GPA if it is above a 3.0, as several companies use this as a minimum GPA requirement. As far as class rank, I would exclude this from your resume as employers will mainly focus on GPA. Best of luck!

I guarantee you that if you ask 5 different recruiters or hiring managers this question, you are likely to receive 5 different answers. Each recruiter or hiring manager is looking for a number of things and it’s completely dependent upon the kind of information they are charged with finding and measuring by the firm they work for. I can give you some general advice though from the perspective of a campus recruiter. If you are a college student, always include your GPA, period, and not your major specific GPA, your overall GPA. Some recruiters may want/need it, some may not, but for those that do, you don’t want your recruiter having to hunt it down. If you are more than a year graduated, I think its safe to remove it at this point. Your GPA becomes a less important measure of your potential performance as you begin to build up actual experience to talk about. As far as class rank is concerned, feel free to maybe include if you’re graduating with honors (cum laude, suma cum lade, etc.) but class rank is not necessary…..but again….just one opinion. At the end of the day, asking the recruiter you’re working with is always a great option!
