Are there any minimum requirements to consider when I apply for internships?

Great question! When an employer advertises their internships, they will list the minimum qualifications required for the position. It is important to look at what those qualifications are, and if you feel you meet them, then apply. You need a resume and cover letter. Transcripts and references only upon request.

Most companies will post what the qualifications are for the internship.  If you meet the qualifications then I would recommend that you apply.  When you apply on-line you may want to point out something relevant to your education, experience, etc. that will call out your brand and differentiate you from the other students.  That could be very helpful to stand out from the rest of the students applying.

Best of luck!

Most internships require that at a minimum you are currently enrolled in some type of formal education program (technical college, 4 year university) and studying in a field where your learning may be applied. However, you may find some internship opportunities where a company is willing to break from the norm and hire individuals who may have taught themselves a particular skill - ex. a particular programming language - and can apply that knowledge in the professional setting.

Although requirements differ from employer to employer, most of the minimum requirements are as follows:
  • ·        Major you are currently studying
  • ·        GPA requirement
  • ·        Undergrad or Graduate
  • ·        Sometimes relevant experience to the internship is needed, but often times if you interview well and express an interest to learn, this is not ultimately a requirement.

It depends on the company, but yes, there can be.  Some companies require a minimum GPA and that you have completed a certain number of hours in school.  What can set you apart from other candidates, however, is your leadership ability and community/campus activity.  These types of things may not be related directly to the position for which you are applying, but they do speak to your character.  It can help the hiring manager to determine if you fit into the culture of the company and could give you a competitive edge.
