I enjoy being an accounts payable specialist. I want to go back to school and continue my education in accounting. How do I find that perfect job where I can learn more accounting skills and reach my goal for a higher position? I have 15 plus years with the basic.

First, it is great that you are thinking about furthering your education.  Unfortunately, there is no perfect formula for finding the perfect job.  However, there are some things that you can do to hopefully put yourself in a position to do the things you mention.  First, understanding what companies have opportunities and where is important.  I suggest researching companies and identifying those that have a large accounting presence in the location you are targeting.  This will ensure that the opoortunities for advancement exist.  The second key is networking.  Leverage LinkedIn and other networking sites to identify contacts at your targeted companies and connect with them.  After connecting, seek out informational interview opportunities to begin to establish an identity with those companies.  After, hopefully getting a job, continue networking with leaders in that organization.  It is important to establish and promote your personal brand at your company so you are considered for opportunities for advancment.  Lastly, once on the job, it is important to be a top performer.  Talk to your leadership and learn about what they feel is important to have in order to advance.

As I mentioned, there is no one great formula, but doing these things has been proven to be successful.

It’s great that you want to go back to school to further your education! These days most companies are on social media sites, including LinkedIn, and by following various companies you can find jobs that align with your interests as well as get connected to recruiters to widen your networking circle. If you go back to school, use your professors, career services, and your peers to learn about possible jobs that you can pursue after finishing school. Good luck!

Your best bet would be to look for a large employer that has lateral or upward mobility in their accounting area. This will give you broader exposure to more areas and help you grow within. Also, larger employers typically have tuition reimbursement as well.

That is great that you want to return to school.  Accounting is a great field to get your degree in.  I recently read an article that there could be a shortage of accounts in the future.  My recommendation would be to obtain your higher education and while you are attending school work with the career placement center to find out when companies will be on campus so you can attend information session and interview.  This will help you determine if you want to leave your current company or move up from a payable specialist into accounting at your current company.  Either way, you will not go wrong.

Best of luck!
