I am a junior getting my bachelors degree in Communication. I would like to work in public relations, social media, or marketing. I worked as a social media intern last summer. I now have a marketing internship at a recruitment advertising agency. I would love for my next job to be in public relations or social media at a fashion company because fashion is my passion. What is the best way to obtain a job like this? Am I doing everything I can to set myself up for a good job after college?

I feel that your social media & marketing internships will give you a great mix of experience. Some suggestions to help you obtain a job in fashion:

- Take additional classes that relate to retail/fashion.
- Network with professionals in the industry.
- Use social media to brand yourself with fashion. Show your passion.
- Learn about the top 10 companies you’d like to work for. Know the market & who’s hiring what you’re looking for.

Good Luck!

Congratulations on the successes that you have racked up in a short amount of time.  In looking to move forward with the next phase of your development plan, make sure to leverage your network from your previous internships to make the connection to PR in the fashion industry.  A lot of times making that first contact is really about knowing someone in the business already who is connected.

While you are focusing on building your professional portfolio do not forget to keep a close watch on your academic studies.  A strong cumulative GPA, solid leadership experiences on and off campus, combined with your internships should position you to be very competitive for a successful transition to a full-time career of your choice.

One of the key ways to get obtain a job in the industry you are interested in is by networking with professionals that are in the fashion industry. You can start to join groups on LinkedIn related to fashion, public relations and social media. This is a great outlet to meet other individuals who have these same interests and potential employers who are looking to fill some of their open positions. I would also recommend researching seminars or conferences to attend that have to do with fashion, social media, public relations, etc. These would be very beneficial to learn more about the profession and network with individuals who potentially know of companies that are hiring.

I would suggest trying to land an internship at a company that you would like to work for. Attend Fall Career Fairs and research companies before the actual career fair. Be confident and read the job descriptions on their website before approaching the companies booth. Connect with people from that certain company on LinkedIn or Twitter. Best of luck!
