How can an individual know if a position is genuinely open to the public and not going internally?

Good morning!
If you are an internal employee usually you have to go through an internal jobsite to view those positions. If you see a position posted somewhere on the internet (i.e. monster.com, indeed.com, etc...) then most likely it is open to the public and posted externally. Have a great holiday and best of luck job searching!

That is a great question. If you are viewing the position posted, definitely the company is accepting applications.  They may have identified a strong potential internal candidate however want to ensure they select the best, most qualified applicant, therefore every application will be reviewed and compared to the qualifications of any internal.  Most companies do try and have  a succession plan in place for critical positions however sometimes identified individuals are not ready when the position becomes available or again the company may want to validate their plan and compare the internal to any external qualified candidates.  Again, if the position is open and you possess the qualifications for the opportunity take that as an invitation to apply and put your best self forward!  Good Luck

The smart move is to seek out the best candidate for the position.  This may mean internal and external candidates are being considered.  So there is no sure fire way to know that a position will go to an external candidate over an internal candidate.  However, if it posted in a public space, it is open to external candidates.

Another way to think about this is that if you are a fantastic, qualified candidate and you apply for a position, you just got your name/info in front of a recruiter.  So even if an internal candidate is selected, you just made it possible you would be considered for other open positions.

Best of luck in your search!
