Often times people start in one area of a function and come to realize that they are better suited for another area. With that being said, in your situation, I would recommend having a conversation with your manager and seeing what your options may be. Of course, having this conversation depends on your relationship with your manager. Since you've been in your current role for a few years, if you have a supportive manager, he/she may be able to put you in contact with an area/role that would be of interest. If speaking with your manager isn't an option, check out groups or organizations on LinkedIn or through your local Chamber of Commerce where you can network with individuals in the type of role that you are targeting. You can gain insight into possible openings and the steps to get into a structural engineering role. If you truly feel this is a move you want to make, don't postpone it, or you may get comfortable in your current role and then have regrets later in your career. Good luck!
