What skills do I need to have if I want to work in the Human Resources Management Field? And do you think online courses can help me gain an internship?

The first thing to think about is to pursue a degree in Human Resources.  Most 4 year colleges offer some kind of HR program which will give you exposure to all areas of the field, and there are many offered on-line.  Another action I would recommend is to pursue an HR certification.  The most common of these is the Professional in Human Resources or Senior Professional in Human Resources certifications through the HR Certification institutue.  Having this certification will help to differentiate you from others.  Lastly, internships are key - either paid or unpaid.  It is critical that you obtain some kind on the job experience in the field.  If you pursue the items above, opportunities for internships will present themselves.  When they do come available, be flexible and willing to go to where ever the opportunity exists.

Hiring Human Resource Interns can be competitive but you have to really show your interest in HR by having something HR related in your resume.
  • College Activities: If you are still in college, try to apply to a HR position in a student group, or join the student SHRM (Society of Human Resource Management) group on campus or the chapter outside campus.
  • Resume Focus: On your resume, tailor it to a HR role where you mention working with a diverse group, resolving issues or conflicts amongst people/group or add the HR classes you have completed like “Intro to Human Resources Management”, “Conflict Management”, “Diversity an Inclusion”.
When hiring managers are looking at resumes to hire a HR Intern, they are always looking for transferrable skills or experience. Tailor your resume to show this and it will increase your chances for a call back to interview.

The other two HR individuals were right now.  Human Resources can be a very competitive field.   Doing internships is a great way to get experience and your foot in the door to any great company.  This will open opportunities within the field and give you insights to what part of HR would like to focus on.
