Hi there! The interview is such an interesting time.  You want to make a good impression, you want to get a feel for the organization, but most of all you want to get the job!  I think people can feel compelled to reshape their responses to what they think someone wants to hear, but that may not yield the results you want.  Though I always recommend putting your best foot forward, I don't think it is a bad thing to be honest and forthcoming about the things that make you stand out and the things you are really looking for in a job.  What better time to do that then during the "describe yourself" portion!

I am someone who enjoys ___________
I think I really maximize my potential in environments like ______________
In my last position I found that I did my best work when I could _________________

These are all phrases that describe yourself while sharing your skills, talking about your strengths and setting the stage for your interviewer to take a deeper dive into who you are.

Best of luck!

This is a very typical question that many interviewers ask, so it’s great that you are thinking ahead. When asked this type of question, the interviewer wants to assess how you perceive yourself. Their question is all about your perception of yourself – seeing yourself as others see you. As you think of your response, think of a couple positive adjectives or phases that describe your personal characteristics or values. It’s important that you keep in mind the type of position you are interviewing for and tailor your response to make you the ideal match for the job and the company.
