It depends on your current policy for requesting time off. If you don't have a policy in place, I would agree with Wendy that it is important to implement something going forward and consistency is key. You can approve time off requests on a first come, first served basis. If someone does request time off but you can't approve it because too many people already have it, you could at that point request proof of court date, doctor's appointment note, etc. With that being said, if you have an HR department, I would ensure that you confirm a new policy with them prior to implementing anything.
