My guess is that they ask for that information in advance, so they'd it on hand for next steps in the process. This could mean they will hold on to it until all interviews are complete, and only proceed with background check and references with the target candidate whom they'd like to extend the offer to. Another potential answer is they move forward with a tiered approach in which background check is initiated, and references are not contacted until after that is complete (which can take 1-3 weeks).
Guessing aside, about a week post interview is a great time to reach out and re-iterate your interest, thank the team, and inquire about when to expect word on the status of your candidacy. This can lead to learning more about the timeline expectation and what's to come. Best of luck!
