I'm 25 years old and am considering leaving my current company for an extremely competitive offer, but the company is going through an merger and employees are anxious about potential layoffs. Should I take the risk and shine at the new company or be conservative and stay put for now?

Hi there - this is an extremely personal decision, so please take my advice with a grain of salt. For me, it would really depend on how happy I was in my current role. If I was truly unhappy or doing work that I didn't enjoy, then there really isn't much to lose moving into another company, even with the turbulence that you mentioned. If you're more concerned about job security, then I might advise that you stay put for now, so long as you're at least moderately happy with what you're doing. This is a tough question and decision! I think it depends on how comfortable and happy you are in your current position. It also depends on your career goals. If you're unhappy in your current position and don't see growth opportunity, it may be worth taking the risk and accepting the new offer. However, it's definitely worth asking probing questions to the new company. Take the time to understand how employee's there view the future state of the company...especially within the department you could potentially be working in. This can be very nerve-racking so don't be afraid to ask your recruiter and/or manager these questions.

With that being said, I agree with what Phil said as well. This is a very personal decision and you have to choose what you think is best for you at the end of the day. If you do accept the new role, I would ensure you leave your current company on good terms so you can leave that door open in the future in case things should change with your job search.
