What can I do to make sure my social media presence is clean and inviting to a recruiter? For example, on LinkedIn and Facebook, what content do they want to see?

It is important to clean up your social media presence when applying for jobs. You will want make sure that you review your Facebook profile to ensure all comments and photographs are appropriate. It's also a good idea to make your profile private so that only your friends can view it. As far as LinkedIn goes, this is basically your online resume, so you want to add as much detail as you can. For starters, be sure to have a professional head shot as your profile picture. You will also want to include what type of position you are looking for in your headline; this will help recruiters find you. Be sure to add relevant work experience as well as any associations or societies in which you participate. Always remember to keep your social media presence private and professional.

Great question! No one can deny that social media has become an important part of our culture and the way we communicate with and get to know each other. When setting up your social media profiles, use professional photos (no selfies) that are current, positive (smile) and represent you. And, make sure you are keeping your education and experience up to date. We encourage you to find pages and groups you can join and network within. Clean is a great objective when it comes to social media, you also want to ensure it paints a very robust picture of your education, extracurricular activities and experiences.  Most importantly make sure you have a complete profile, don't leave anything out that you can take advantage of to expand your exposure to the right employers.  Start with your picture, be sure it is a professional head shot that only includes you in the picture (no pets please).  Second be sure that you utilize the "headline" to capture what it is you are looking for, remember LinkedIn is a search engine.  Your summary should grab attention and keep the reader wanting more information. The majority of the profile is your experience where you can highlight your experiences and skills.  Be sure to use key words in your profile, go to a few employers websites, look at their job postings and the words they use in the job descriptions, roles and responsibilities, these are a great place to start.  It is also a good idea to ask for recommendations on your profile, and ask each person to include specific skills and highlight specific examples of your experiences, this will offer a broad scope for future employers to view.  And finally take advantage to include groups, and even look to join specific targeted groups this will be a great way to broaden the view and bring some focus to your profile.  Best of Luck!
